Ⅰ. Educational Objectives
The English specialty aims to cultivate English-major talents and inter-disciplinary English talents who can meet the needs of social and economic development locally and nationally. Graduates from this specialty should be credited with desirable comprehensive qualities and proficient English language skills, grasp the relative major knowledge and theories, obtain good English communication ability. They can get employed by government organs, foreign affairs institutions, foreign trade companies, foreign enterprises, foreign financial agencies, business management companies, translation firms, news agencies and publishing houses, travel agencies, hotels, etc. in such jobs as business management, business translation and business negotiation or in such roles as business secretary, foreign business agent, public relation worker and tour guide. They can also work in schools or colleges as teachers or researchers.
Ⅱ. Graduation Requirements
This major emphasizes the cultivation of basic theory, basic knowledge, basic abilities (skills), healthy personality, comprehensive quality and innovation spirit; creates conditions for students to fully participate in activities like teaching reforms, scientific research and social services, etc.; helps students to discover and develop their own interest and abilities, and maximize their intelligence and potentials by participation; emboldens them to face challenges, keep on exploring, strive for progress, and pursue the excellence; provides them conditions to cultivate their ability of working independently and working in a team, and push them to form the habit of lifelong learning and autonomous learning.
After four years of systematic study, graduates from this major must meet the following standard for graduation:
1. Knowledge: A mastery of the English language, culture and literature, a good general understanding of English-speaking countries, a good command of the Chinese language and culture, a grasp of the basic knowledge of relevant specialties, humanities and social sciences to construct an inter-disciplinary knowledge structure with distinctive specialty characteristics.
2. Qualities: A possession of a proper outlook on the world, life and social values, fine moral quality, affection for China and international vision, humanities and social science literacy, cooperative spirit, creative spirit and basic disciplinary qualities.
3. Abilities: An acquisition of abilities of language application, literature appreciation, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, and the competence of doing proper research, innovation, info-tech application, autonomous learning and practicing.
4. Professional norms: A strong sense of social responsibility with basic knowledge of the humanities and social sciences to understand and comply with the professional ethics and norms and fulfill their responsibilities in practice.
5. Team work: The ability to undertake the role of individuals, team members and the team head in the multidisciplinary background.
6. Communication: The ability of effective communication and exchange in English, including writing reports and designing documents, presentation speech, clear expression or response to commands. An international vision to communicate under the cross-cultural background.
7. Lifelong learning: An awareness of autonomous learning and lifelong learning to be able to learn constantly and adapt to the development of society.
Ⅲ. Characteristics of the Specialty
This specialty is geared to cultivating high-caliber professional talents who are proficient in English and well-informed in science and technology. Advanced educational and pedagogical ideas are adopted to develop students’ English competence, humanistic spirit, cultural quality, and capability of autonomous learning and knowledge application.
